Free Image Metadata Remover

When you capture a photo with a smartphone or digital camera, it invisibly embeds hidden information known as "metadata" (such as EXIF, XMP, or IPTC data). This often includes the exact GPS coordinates of where you were standing, the date and time, the camera model, and the software you used to edit the image.

Our Free Image Metadata Remover creates a perfectly clean copy of your image with all embedded metadata safely stripped out, entirely inside your web browser. Because the image is processed locally, your private photos and tracking data are never uploaded to any server.

Key Features

Local Browser Processing

Your images are decoded and re-encoded using secure Canvas APIs directly on your device. We do not use backend servers or APIs to process your sensitive photos.

Smart Detection

Before removing anything, we scan the file and warn you if critical data like EXIF or GPS coordinates are detected. If the file is already clean, we let you know immediately.

Batch Processing

Clean hundreds of photos in a single click. Our asynchronous batch processor handles large queues without freezing your browser, and lets you download everything in a neat ZIP file.

Format Fallbacks

If your browser does not natively support re-encoding certain modern formats (like AVIF), we automatically fallback to saving a high-quality PNG to ensure you always get a clean result.

How it Works

  1. Upload: Drag and drop your JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF files into the tool.
  2. Detection: We instantly scan the file (using the exact same engine as our Metadata Viewer) and visually flag if EXIF, XMP, or GPS location data is found.
  3. Remove Metadata: Click "Remove Metadata". We safely decode the visual pixels onto a hidden canvas and re-encode a brand new image file, entirely leaving the hidden tracking data behind.
  4. Verify & Download: Preview the visually identical but privacy-safe cleaned image before downloading it to your device.

Why Removing Metadata Matters

  • Protecting Location Privacy: GPS tags can reveal your exact home address, workplace, or travel habits to anyone who downloads your photo from a public forum or social media.
  • Concealing Device Information: EXIF data often includes unique device serial numbers or software versions that could potentially be used for fingerprinting.
  • Reducing File Size: Embedded thumbnails, extensive color profiles, and raw metadata blocks can bloat your file. Stripping them often results in a smaller, optimized file perfect for web use.

Important Note on Re-encoding

This is not a lossless operation. Because strict browser security models do not allow arbitrary binary file modification of uploaded blobs, we strip metadata by drawing your image to a secure hidden canvas and re-encoding it. While the resulting image is visually identical to the original and encoded at maximum quality, the exact file size, checksum, and compression structures may differ from your original file.
